Is Gripe Water Safe
Is Gripe Water safe? Are you tempted to try gripe water to treat your babies colic but are wary of the side effects? This article discusses the issues regarding the use of gripe water and answers the question ‘Is gripe water safe for babies?’
Gripe water has been used to treat colic for a very long time. In recent years there has beenĀ resurgence in the use of gripe water as a means of colic relief as more and more parents are turning towards more natural methods of medication.
But just how safe is gripe water?
Gripe water consists of many different ingredients depending on the brand and manufacturer. The main ingredients in gripe water should be purely herbal and as natural as possible.
Are these herbal ingredients safe?
There are some ingredients used in gripe water that can have adverse effects on your baby. Remember that everybody is different and so is every baby.
Some babies are very sensitive and can react quite badly to certain herbs. Aniseed is a common ingredient and allergies are common. Although your baby may not have allergic reactions to the ingredients, their digestive tract may not agree with some of the ingredients and the symptoms of colic may worsen.
Apart from individual reactions to the ingredients itself, it is important to understand your babies symptoms. If your baby suffers from acid reflux, you should not give them anything that contains peppermint as this can cause it to get worse.
Many times it is very difficult to find out what symptoms are causing your baby discomfort-indigestion, wind, gas or even constipation. Because of this gripe water can be a very difficult remedy to deem as completely safe. However, there are no serious complications that can occur. At the very most, your babies symptoms will worsen and you should stop immediately.
Some brands of gripe water than contain alcohol, simethicone and sodium bicarbonate are not recommended for babies. These ingredients do nothing to help colic and can have a detrimental effect on your childs health.
Gripe water should not be administered to babies under the age of 1 month as their digestive tracts may not be able to cope with the herbal concoction.
